Gulliver’s Travels, written by Jonathan Swift, follows Lemuel Gulliver, a ship’s surgeon who embarks on a series of extraordinary voyages. During his travels, Gulliver encounters strange lands and societies. In the first part, he visits Lilliput, a tiny island where the inhabitants are only six inches tall. In the second part, he reaches Brobdingnag, a land of giants, where Gulliver feels insignificant. The third part takes him to Laputa, a floating island of intellectuals obsessed with abstract ideas, and to other islands where he encounters strange and satirical societies. In the final part, Gulliver visits the land of the Houyhnhnms, rational horses who live in peace, in contrast to the brutish human-like creatures called Yahoos. Throughout his adventures, Swift critiques human nature, society, and politics with sharp satire.
